Biography

After completing his doctorate in history and political science, he worked as a researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin from 1995 to 1997, and then began working at EHESS - École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris Higher School of Social Sciences). From 2002 to 2008, he also served as the director of the Institut d’études de l’islam et des sociétés du monde musulman (Institute for the Study of Islam and Muslim Societies of the World) within the same institution. He currently continues his research as a professor at EHESS. He is known for his work on violence in the Middle East, political movements, and the Kurdish issue. His works published in Türkiye include The Middle East: A History of Violence (2010), The Political Sociology of the Middle East (2012), History of Turkey: From Empire to the Present (2015), and Luxury and Violence: Domination and Resistance in Ibn Khaldun (2016), which was awarded the Med 21 Programme Ibn Khaldun Prize.
